According
to Hindu mythology, the creator of the world - Lord Brahma - performed the "Vedic
Yagna" (the holy sacrifice) at Pushkar. Hence, it is the only place in
the world that has a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. Pushkar was always a
special place for the religious-minded and was frequented by pilgrims. The
city has over five hundred temples.
The Pushkar fair is exciting,
exhilarating and unique. The fair takes place sometime in October -
November. The last four days are considered the most sacred and a dip in the
Pushkar Lake is required of the devotees. The fair is an occasion for
worship, trade and exhibition of domesticated animals, all wrapped into one
tremendous event that lasts for a week.
